Services(Testing) - Specimen
General guidelines
Generally, the specimen requirements are shown in a format that specifies the specimen type, required volume, storage temperature, and any special notes.
There are various pre-analytical factors associated with the handling and processing of specimens that can lead to test result inaccuracy. Strict adherence to all phases of proper handling is essential for accurate test results.
Specimen labeling requirements
SRL has established a uniform policy for specimen acceptance/rejection that:
- Protects specimen quality
- Contributes to patient care
- Eliminates risk of exposure to the laboratory staff
- Complies with all accreditation standards
For patient safety, each specimen container must have a label firmly affixed to the container, not the container lid or any boxes or bags for transporting specimens, that contains the following minimum information:
Patient’s full name (last name, first name) and/or unique ID;
Date of specimen collection;
and Specimen type
Specimens received unlabeled, double labeled, or with a requisition bearing a name and/or ID number different than what is affixed to the specimen will not be tested.
